IVF for LGBTQ People

IVF for LGBTQ People

In the twenty-first century, the concept of family has become more diverse and inclusive than ever before. As an important part of this diversity, reproductive health services for LGBTQ individuals and couples, particularly in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, have become increasingly important. Thanks to modern medicine and changing social structures, the LGBTQ community now has more options and support to start their own families.
IVF treatment makes it possible for LGBTQ people to have a biological child of their own. For same-sex couples, single parents and transgender people, this treatment is a critical step towards realizing their dream of becoming a family.
For LGBTQ people, in vitro fertilization can present various ethical and legal challenges. In this process, it is essential to protect the rights of individuals and couples and to prioritize the principles of confidentiality and consent.
At Cyprus Fertility Center, we wholeheartedly support members of the LGBTQ+ community in this process and believe that every individual has the right to have a child.

IVF Treatment for LGBTQ
Treatment is tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of each individual or couple, and psychological counseling provides emotional support and empowers individuals on their journey to family building.

Same-sex Couples
Same-sex couples apply for surrogacy programs in order to have a child. Depending on the couple’s decision, only one sperm can be used, both sperms can be used for the procedure or sperm donation and embryo donation can be an option. The procedure is the same as for egg donation and surrogacy. Sometimes the eggs collected are shared, fertilized with sperm from both partners and the resulting embryos are transferred to the surrogate or mothers. For same-sex couples, egg or sperm donation allows them to have a genetically linked child. The choice of donor is based on the individual’s preferences and health needs.

Lesbian Couples
Eggs are collected from one of the partners and embryos are created with sperm selected from the sperm bank and these embryos are preferably transferred to the other partner on the 5th day. This type of treatment is called the ROPA Method. In this most preferred method, both of them are the mother of the baby and one is defined as the biological and the other as the genetic mother. Sometimes couples can plan treatment by changing the location between themselves and reversing the situation. Sometimes eggs can be collected from both candidates and processed. Or both partners may want to give birth. As a result of the physician’s evaluation, it is determined which one will be more appropriate and the treatment process is continued according to the wishes of the couple.

The subsequent treatment process is the same as the sperm donation treatment process.

Transgender Individuals
Transgender people can conceive on their own or through in vitro fertilization (IVF), or they can try other treatment options such as egg donation, sperm donation, embryo donation and surrogacy.

In order to achieve the desired result during IVF treatment, the hormone treatments used by transgender individuals that negatively affect the treatment can be stopped. It is recommended to start hormone treatments after the IVF treatment is completed. In gender transition operations, egg sperm cells or embryos are frozen for future use in order to have children. The management of these treatment processes is coordinated by our team.
