Tandem Cycle

What is a Tandem Cycle?

Tandem cycle is a treatment method in which donor eggs or donor sperm are supplemented in addition to the donor’s own reproductive cells, and the embryos formed from these cells are followed separately and selected according to the progress.

It is a highly preferred method especially for those who have not fully decided on donation or who want to give their own cells one last chance, and who want to take advantage of time and cost in the meantime.

With this method, the expectant mother maintains her chances of conception and the treatment is not canceled if her own cells do not develop well.

If egg supplementation is to be performed, the expectant mother and the egg donor start treatment simultaneously. Both ovaries are stimulated and eggs are collected under anesthesia. The sperm sample taken from the father-to-be and the eggs of the mother-to-be and the donor are combined in the laboratory by microinjection method and turned into embryos.

Embryo development is monitored and the embryos are transferred on day 3 or day 5. If the embryos of the expectant mother are good enough to have a chance of pregnancy, priority is given to her own embryos and the embryos made with donor eggs are frozen for re-evaluation depending on the pregnancy outcome. If the expectant mother’s embryos do not develop, the donor embryos are transferred. Sometimes the expectant mother may want to transfer both her own and donor embryos together. If the expectant mother is psychologically ready for this, this request will not be refused.

If sperm supplementation is to be performed, the ovaries of the expectant mother are stimulated and her eggs are collected under anesthesia. This time, the sperm sample taken from the expectant father and the sperm cells selected from the sperm bank are dissolved and the eggs of the expectant mother are combined in the laboratory by microinjection method and turned into embryos.

Embryo development is closely monitored and transfer is planned on day 3 or day 5, depending on the situation. If there is a chance of pregnancy, embryos made with the woman’s own cells will be preferred. Embryos made with bank sperm are frozen to be re-evaluated depending on the pregnancy outcome.
